There is no second chance to make a good first impression.
Professional image is the perception that a person has from the environment in which he or she works, based on the "stimuli" that he or she emanates during his or her work activity. It reflects the person who exercises his or her profession, whatever it may be; in a few words, it is a mix between how he or she looks and how he or she acts.
There are three main components of the professional image, which are:
- Physical image: “It is not enough to be professional, you have to look professional.” You must be consistent and know how to dress appropriately for each occasion, whether for a gala dinner or attending the organization’s internal Olympics.
- Nonverbal image: Gestures, gestures and body language also communicate. A person standing upright, with relaxed shoulders, a firm gaze and looking into the eyes of the interlocutor, conveys leadership, conviction, authority and confidence.
- Verbal image: The good image projected must be complemented with a demonstration that you have the technical knowledge and experience required to be a software consultant. It is important to have a broad vocabulary and to achieve this the best way is to read constantly.
Lola García, a consultant for Communication and Comprehensive Image for Microsoft, says that the image and attitude that a professional can project is fundamental when it comes to imposing a degree of superiority.
“Even if you don't realize it, everyone projects their personality through the image they present to the outside world. Therefore, if there is no presence or leadership attitude, it will be difficult for them to take control of the business or the job” -Lola García.
The professional image of a consultant impacts three main points in your company: sales, leadership and credibility. According to a study carried out by El Economista in Mexico, only 5% of SMEs are concerned about this area. Therefore, taking care of this issue can make the difference between you and your competitors.
Here are some Microtips that you can use to improve your professional image:
- Be punctual.
- Don't promise things you don't know you can deliver.
- Give a welcome greeting.
- Do not use the informal form without first asking permission.
- Speak in a professional manner.
- Dress according to the occasion, but without feeling uncomfortable.
- Maintain proper posture when sitting in front of a prospect, client or co-worker.
A good professional image is a key factor in closing deals, and may even be more important than your words.
Remember that as a consultant you are your own brand, and the image and personality you give it will be what defines your company to people. Don't try to give it an image different from yours, rather work on one based on your objectives.
