E-commerce in Mexico, a reality.

The Mexican Internet Association (AMIPCI), aware of the need to understand and analyze the aspects that may affect electronic commerce in our country, presents the Electronic Commerce Study in Mexico 2016, which is now in its 11th version and is divided into two sections, which investigate the components of electronic commerce: Buyers and Businesses.
Buyers in E-Commerce
The analyses were conducted by interviewing digital buyers in Mexico and the country's main e-commerce players, to obtain a view of both supply and demand.
E-commerce growth in Mexico from 2013 to 2014 was 34%, however, from 2014 to 2015 it was 59% and growth is expected to be higher in 2016 since Mexico is key in e-commerce in Latin America.
Around seven out of ten Mexican Internet users have made a digital purchase, and among the most commonly used devices, smartphones have surpassed laptops and desktop computers, which are decreasing their share year after year.
The purchasing categories, ranked by growth, were:
- Clothes and accessories
- Digital downloads
- Tickets for events
- Furniture, appliances and equipment
- Consumer Electronics
- Jewelry and watches
- Sports and wellness
- Music, movies and videos (physical copies only)
- General services
- Computers and peripherals
- Consumer packaged goods
- Office Supplies
- Flowers, cards and gifts
- Home & Garden
Now, PayPal, debit cards and credit cards are the preferred payment methods for online purchases on all devices, although 80% of respondents stated that security issues were the main reason for not saving information in online stores.
One telling finding was that shoppers indicated that several factors could increase their likelihood of making purchases with specific retailers, such as secure payment options, free shipping, guaranteed return policies, and customer service via phone, chat, and social media.
Another interesting fact is that approximately three out of five mobile users said they had used their devices to research, compare prices, product details, and find nearby stores, so having an online store will also increase your sales in physical stores.
Shops in Electronic Commerce
The main categories sold by online retailers in 2016 are:
- Clothing and accessories
- Sports and wellness
- Computers and peripherals
- Digital downloads
- Electronics
- Furniture, appliances and equipment
- Home and Garden
- Jewelry and watches
- Toys and hobbies
- Video games, consoles and accessories
- Computer software (not including PC games)
- Books and magazines (physical copies only)
- Consumer packaged goods
- Office Supplies
- General services
- Tickets for events
- Flowers, cards and various gifts
Nearly six in ten retailers reported that they have a physical store, and the majority have no plans to close any, and among those online retailers that also have physical stores, sales in their physical stores accounted for more than 75% of their sales. Among retailers that have both physical and online stores, the physical store continues to be perceived as the foundation of their business, and the online store complements and expands their offering.
It is a reality that e-commerce in Mexico continues to grow frantically year after year. Having an online store with high security and responsive standards will be necessary if you want to have any solid participation in this sales channel.
